Happy National Hugging Day! This appropriate quote was sent to me in honor of this special day:
"Hug a runner... Share the moment... Share the sweat"
😄
It's not about how fast or how far, it's about how running makes you feel.

Snap, Crackle, Pop
No sooner do I decide to run another marathon (or two!) then my knee starts bothering me again. I have pain and popping when walking. In my professional, medical opinion...I'm not a doctor, but I have Internet access...the reason my knee bothers me is because I pronate when I run, especially on my right foot. As a result, my IT band gets tight which leads to pain in my knee. To mitigate this I wear running shoes with high stability support. My current shoe of choice is the Mizuno Wave Nirvana 8. I 💙 these shoes! However, as much as the shoes have helped a lot (seriously, I'm enamored with them), my return to 5-6 days of exercise a week has led to a sore knee. Commence use of KT Tape! I also 💙 KT Tape. I first used KT Tape this past fall when my knee was last bothering me. I feel the tape works better than knee straps. Plus, there are instructional videos online that detail how to apply the tape depending on the pain area. After using the tape, combined with the shoes, for a couple weeks I was able to run without it, until recently. It could be the influx of activity or that the shoes need to be replaced since they are 6 months old (new ones are on the way!). I'll run with the tape for a little while then switch shoes if needed. I'm even opting to wear the tape during the day too, it helps that! much! In case you couldn't tell, I highly recommend KT Tape. Sure it's been endorsed by professional athletes before this blog, but now that SuperJulia has recommended it... sales are sure to skyrocket! 😉

Starting the Day Off Right
What is the rule for capitalizing words contained in titles? I can never remember. Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure I still have a grammar handbook lying around here somewhere...
ANYway
I love sleeping in. I love staying up late, too, which is probably why I love sleeping in. However, sleep in days are few and far between in my life right now. So why did I choose to set my alarm for just as early as a weekday when it was Saturday? Isn't the answer obvious? Running!
As much as I love sleeping in, I equally love the sense of accomplishment and awesomeness of a morning run. There's the joy of carving some special me-time out of an otherwise busy weekend. Happiness over donning one of my new running skirts and taking advantage of the nearly 50 degree weather before it dropped 20 degrees over the remainder of the day. A sense of calm as I run away the frustrations and concerns of the week. These things are amplified when the run itself is truly enjoyable.
This morning's run was all of those things and more. It was a great reminder that running benefits my body and my spirit.
Of course the bragging rights for getting up early to run help, too. ;)

The episode in which I did not become a supermodel
My family's heritage is broad. I consider myself a true "melting pot" of national backgrounds. However in this pot, my dad's genes took the forefront. My mom was blessed with thick hair and a slender frame. The rest of us...not so much. I maintain that I am built for manual labor, specifically behind two yoked oxen. But I digress.
I've been diligent with working out. I actually enjoy it, maybe not always in the moment, but being consistent and sticking with a plan is generally beneficial to my overall health and just plain puts me in a good mood. I am addicted to the runner's high. (And running skirts...I now own 5...I have a problem.) Last night, during my Sculpt workout with Leandro, I was thinking how nice it's been to have a good solid routine. Last year I had some sporadic periods, and November and December were decreased as well due to a lot of other activities. But overall I did pretty well and, now that the holidays are done, I'm back to my routine. (My shins are happy to remind me that they got used to 2-3 days a week in November and December instead of 5-6, but they'll get over it.) The workouts are still hard and I need to push more so I don't become complacent. And I still get a little sad when I compare myself to the fitness models on the DVDs. Even so, I feel in a pretty good place right now. I am seeing results of my workout journey. (I finally bought my first pair of skinny jeans and knee-high boots, basically guaranteeing both will go out of style soon.) I eat less junk and my body repays me with awesome workouts. I can't change the way I'm built. I'm still 5'5" and by no means a supermodel. And while I may always look best behind a team of oxen, at least I can survive a day of good manual labor.

Oh Google...
This weekend my daughter has an away basketball tournament. I packed my running clothes...including new Bula (versatile head gear) and running skirt awesomeness!...hoping to squeeze in a run while she hung out with her friends. Fortunately, after two tense, closely scored games (one loss and one win), I was able to do just that. Unfortunately, Google maps was off on the location of my destination, so I ended up backtracking a couple times when I really should have continued down the road a little further. I guess I got a little longer run than originally planned. The only issue was that I stopped to try and figure out where I was, which left me chilled. I really wanted to warm up in the brewery I passed, but I didn't have any money to buy a tasty beverage, so I'm settling for a post run coffee instead. ;-)

Today's Tip
A philosophical one to start off the new year.
"There are as many reasons for running as there as days in a year, years in a life. But I run because I am an animal and a child, an artist and a saint. So, too, are you. Find your own play, your own self-renewing compulsion, and you will become the person you are meant to be."
Dr. George Sheehan, cardiologist, best-selling author and runner who ran a 4:47 mile at age 50

2.5 miles to start off the new year! It was 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Brrr. I'm really happy I bought my versatile "Survivor" style buff. It was nice to cover my nose and mouth in the wind. I wanted to run longer, but I'll add in an ab workout this evening to round out the day.
It's back to "real life" tomorrow, back to work after almost two weeks off. I will miss sleeping in and running in the late morning, especially since it is sill getting dark so early. I have some new opportunities at work I'm excited/nervous about. More about that later...
